After years of teaching in a variety of settings, we have found that private lessons are the most efficient way to learn to swim. Each lesson is tailored specifically to the student’s skill level, goals and comfort in the aquatic environment.
For example, in group lessons, if a student is afraid to put their face in the water, they will not be advanced to the next level, and may end up repeating the same 6-week class multiple times. This is not an issue in private lessons, where the instructor has time to assist the student, using a variety of methods, in overcoming their fear. Although we do have a good track record of success in the “face-in-the-water” area, if this continues to be a challenge, there are many other skills that can be learned first. After the student’s confidence is stronger, putting their face in the water and learning related skills may be easier.
On the other hand, a more confident swimmer may advance through the skills faster than their peers, and can do so in a private lesson. It is rare that we find two individuals, even if they are the same age and swim level, who remain well-matched throughout the learning process. There is almost always a difference in the pace at which each learns, their comfort level with the water, and their proficiency or difficulty with the various strokes.
In terms of scheduling, private lessons allow you the freedom to schedule each one at a time that works for you. Too often, students register for a series of group lessons and end up missing many of them due to illness, conflicting events or other reasons. At You Can Learn to Swim, you have the option to schedule as many or as few lessons as are needed to reach the student's goals. There is no need to purchase packages or adhere to anyone's schedule besides the instructor's and your own.
*In addition to our beginner swim lessons, we also offer lessons to current swimmers who would like to improve their strokes, and to new military personnel, college students, and scouts who need to pass a swim test.
